Finding Calm in Chaos: Easing Anxiety in Young Adults On a quiet Wednesday afternoon, I received a call from a young woman in her final year of college. She was brilliant, ambitious, and from a loving family in South Mumbai. Yet, every evening, an invisible weight pressed down on her chest. Simple decisions overwhelmed her, social media drained her, and sleep felt like a luxury. Her words were familiar: “I don’t know why I feel this way… but I’m always anxious.” Anxiety in young adults is becoming increasingly common – not because this generation is weaker or more sensitive, but because they’re navigating a uniquely complex world. Performance pressure, uncertainty about the future, and the constant hum of notifications can create an emotional storm that’s hard to weather alone. Why This Matters Now In my work with young adults across India and beyond, I’ve seen a consistent pattern: anxiety doesn’t always look dramatic. It’s often subtle – procrastination, irritability, sleep issues, or just a nagging feeling of being “not good enough.” And because it’s invisible, it’s frequently dismissed. But anxiety is real, valid, and treatable. Simple Ways to Soothe Anxiety While these tools won’t replace deeper work, they can offer short-term relief and help you feel more in control when anxiety spikes. Think of them as emotional first-aid; useful in the moment, but not a substitute for understanding the root causes. Here are a few techniques I often recommend to clients:
1. The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique Use your senses to bring yourself to the present. Name – 5 things you can see – 4 things you can touch – 3 things you can hear – 2 things you can smell – 1 thing you can taste This exercise anchors your mind in the ground reality when it starts spiralling.
2. Create Tiny Rituals Start and end your day with calming cues – like 5 minutes of deep breathing, stretching, or Journaling. These rituals signal safety to the nervous system.
3. Set Digital Boundaries The “always-on” culture is exhausting. Try silent mornings or a 30-minute scroll-free evening. Disconnect to reconnect with yourself.
4. Talk About It Anxiety thrives in silence. Sharing your experience with a friend, family member, or a therapist who can provide guidance can be a fundamental and essential step to healing.
5. A Local Touch of Calm Malabar Hill has always been a place of quiet resilience. Whether it’s a slow walk through Hanging Gardens or pausing by the sea wall at Priyadarshini Park, our surroundings can gently nudge us back to balance.

Sometimes, nature’s pace reminds us to slow down.
