Teen Years, Motherhood, Menopause – Same Body, Different Needs
In Hindu philosophy, life is divided into four stages or Ashramas—Brahmacharya, Grihastha, anaprastha and Sannyasa. While these stages are often understood spiritually, they also beautifully reflect the body’s own changing needs through life. Brahmacharya, the student phase, mirrors the Teenage Years. It is a time of rapid growth, hormonal shifts, emotional changes and building the foundation for the future. Teen tantrums, acne, low energy, mood swings, poor sleep and hair fall are often signs that the body is asking for more nourishment. This is the phase where protein, iron, calcium, magnesium, healthy fats and B vitamins become deeply important. Grihastha, the householder phase, reflects Adulthood, Marriage, Work, Pregnancy, Motherhood and raising a Family. This is often the most demanding stage physically and emotionally. Post-pregnancy exhaustion, nutrient depletion, sleep disturbances, stress, weight gain and mood changes are not weaknesses—they are signs that the body has given a lot and now needs replenishment. The body requires deeper support with minerals, hydration, rest, gut-friendly foods, movement and consistent routines. Vanaprastha, the gradual retreat stage, can be related to Menopause & the years leading into it. This phase brings major shifts in hormones, sleep, digestion, metabolism, bone health & emotions. Instead of fearing menopause, this phase can be embraced as a transition into wisdom, self-care & slowing down. Foods rich in calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, omega-3 fats, fibre & protein become even more important. Finally comes Sannyasa, the stage of detachment and inner peace. This is the phase of ageing gracefully, preserving mobility, digestion, clarity, immunity and emotional well being. These stages do not need fear, alarm or anxiety. They are natural transformations. The body is not “failing” during these years—it is changing. And every change asks you to show up and love your body a little differently. The demands of the teenage years are not the same as motherhood. The demands of menopause are not the same as old age. Every stage has its own nutritional, emotional and physical needs. Through every stage, the gut quietly supports the journey—digesting, absorbing, repairing and helping the body make use of nutrients. But years of stress, high cortisol, poor eating habits, rushed meals, loneliness and lack of sleep can weaken gut ora and reduce nutrient absorption. This is why every stage of life needs not just good food, but also better digestion and absorption.
