How Unimportant Is Your Liver

Tushar Prabhoo August 14, 2025 4 minutes read

Liver, as the name suggests, is the life giver! But why do you bother- it comes free with the body anyways! Let’s look at how unimportant this useless organ is, in our body. Some days back, one client came in the office, laughing and says, I really want to work on weight loss, give me some plan, which just reduces my weight. I need at least 10-12 kgs loss in a month. “Can you put in one some fast mode weight loss pill or at least do anything that I reduce it fast, I am humble eater, completely vegetarian and no bad habits, occasional drink once in a week, mostly eating home cooked food.

liver

I love my chai, 3 times a day and please don’t cut down my sugar in the chai.” His liver enzymes, SGOT, SGPT stood at just a little above normal levels and GGT was 20 U/Ml higher than the regular parameters, and as it is doctor’s usually mention, that high cholesterol is just a regular high. No big deal. I have occasional acidity, and manage to eat ice cream once in a while to curb it. He says, its fine on most of the days. Seems like, life was straight out of the ordinary. I insisted on doing a USG pelvis and abdomen. As was predicted, it was fatty Liver grade2. Still no biggie. Yes, Liver is certainly unimportant organ after all. I sat down with him, explained him how gutter works. In a lay man way, ·When you eat any food, liver releases a soda like substance (BILE JUICE) to work on breaking down your fats and manages its own cholesterol. ·Helps in regulating your hormones and testosterone, which makes you feel like a man, and help you perform when you need it. ·Helps your toxins and caffeine load, to break and strain like your Tea strainer, and by having so many Teas and sugar, you have put holes in your strainer. Hence acidity kicks in. ·Helps you managing energy shifts by having its own glucose factory, in the night; when you are sleeping. Its working to make your heart and brain function- and not shutting it down. ·Same glucose is not regulated, when your own strainer is turning thicker and having one big hole to function. ·A Grade2 fatty liver, hardens with time and turns chronic, which turns into NON ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE, and this makes you already a prediabetic person, not allowing the mid-section belly/abdomen to lose fat easily. Imagine the level of paradox, we have to create, when you have to share it with lay person. Finally at some place, we had a good understanding of how IMPORTANT Liver is. Liver is a storehouse of all metabolic activity, hormone regulations, regulating certain vitamins and minerals, creates its bile juice, which helps in breaking down the fat and manages fat regulation and the biggest and most important role – “EXCRETION”. Excretion of all toxic waste, crap that makes you inflamed. This 3-pound silent driver of the body is most undemanding organ and silently bearing the brunt of all that’s happening wrong. Imagine, it’s the elder of the family who has to earn the bread for the family and throws out all the miscreants who are disturbing the peace of the house. This isn’t about weight loss, its about how health is achieved through good Fat Loss. You don’t put on weight / fat because you eat a lot. You put on weight because of the organ misbehavior. Look out for signs, that are screaming at you, your weight gain is ONLY one of them. BY POOJA AHUJA, Clinical and Sports Nutrition. Scan the QR code for any inquiries.
